Statement from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on the Philippines’ National Heroes Day

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on the Philippines’ National Heroes Day:

“In every country’s history, there are always heroes who appeared at pivotal moments, unifying their nation and propelling it forward. Sometimes they are champions of national independence, such as Andrés Bonifacio, who fought for freedom and equality. Other times, they are artists like José Rizal, who beautifully captured the culture and spirit of their nation.

“Every year, on the last Sunday in August, Filipinos around the world come together to honour these towering figures; the heroes of history and the heroes among us today.

“Whether they are the many tremendous people who helped shape the Philippines into a powerful democracy, artists, folk heroes, or healthcare workers, heroically saving lives wherever they go, National Heroes Day is a day to recognize that the Philippines has been and continues to be built by generations of incredible patriots.

“Today, as Filipinos at home and around the world celebrate their heroes, Canada celebrates with them. Together, we honour the iconic figures who dedicated their lives to making the Philippines a stronger, more prosperous nation, and we recognize the many people who continue to make a positive difference in their communities every single day.

“Happy National Heroes Day!”
